Planning a movie night tonight?
Horror movies involving a group of friends seems a good idea. Doesn’t it?
Movies involving a group of people is always interesting to watch. There are more people at stake, more drama and more deaths. So, here is a list of movies that involve a group who land into a deadly situation:
1. Army of the Dead (2021)
Runtime: 2h 28m
The latest addition in the zombie horror is this colourful and extravagant Army of the dead. This movie comes from Zack Snyder who has also previously directed another zombie movie 20 years ago. Thus, Army of the Dead is expected to be better and bolder.
Army of the dead is definitely about a zombie apocalypse taking place in LA. In addition, it includes an interesting element of heist. We see how a group assembles, plan and finally enter the danger zone filled with zombies. Moreover, these zombies are not the foolish ones, they have some sort of intelligence and they have their own king and queen. If you are still aren’t convinced, watch it for the zombie tiger. It is terrific.
2. Final Girls (2015)
Runtime: 1h 31m
Final Girls is a parody to the 80s camp slasher movies. It is about a group of friends who are transported into a famous 80’s slasher called ‘The Sleepaway Camp’. Now, they need to figure out a way to get out of this 80’s movie without getting killed.
Honestly speaking, this movie was such a fun watch. The visuals reminded me of Stranger Things and even the slightest background noises made me laugh. Though its low on gore, it is filled with tension, laughter, feel good moments and even a time loop sequence.
3. IT Chapter 1 (2017)
Runtime: 2h 15m
IT’s a nostalgic story about a group of outcasts fighting an evil clown.
IT Chapter 1 delivers 80s summer vibes and an enjoyable horror story.
IT is based on Stephen King’s novel and is about an evil entity (in the form of a clown) which appears every 27 years in a town called Derry. In every 27 years, after the clown’s appearance, there are cases of missing children and other catastrophic events. When Pennywise arrives this time, it targets a group of friends who must leave behind their insecurities and fight Pennywise.
4. Train to Busan (2016)
Runtime: 1h 58m
Train to Busan is a ride filled with emotions, tragic scenes and of course, a lot of horror. This movie has become a game changer for zombie horror as well as the Korean cinema.
In Train to Busan, we follow a father and daughter. Father is an egoistic man who’s the head of a multimillion-dollar company. He’s so caught up in his business that he doesn’t give time to his daughter. Eventually out regret he accompanies her to Busan to drop her off at her mom’s place. But as you know, things don’t go as expected. There a zombie attack in the train and chaos builds up for the worse.
The fact that Train to Busan has such great characters, it makes the killings more emotional. Even the side characters are just as well written that it will make you cry. A horror movie that makes you cry? Yes, it will.
5. Howl (2015)
Runtime: 1h 29m
Howl is a close relative to Train to Busan. Instead of zombies there are scary werewolf like creatures. And I must admit some of the scenes were so terrifying that it kept me at the edge of my seat.
Howl is about a group of passengers travelling out of London on a train. Due to some circumstances, the train stops in the middle of a forest. As the passengers and the driver try to get the train fixed, they realise they are not alone. They need to get the train going asap otherwise all of them will become prey to the legendary werewolf humanoids.
It’s scary, it’s a good popcorn horror.
6. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Runtime: 1h 31m
Have you experienced a nightmare which felt uncannily real? Well, it is what this group of protagonists undergo in the Nightmare on Elm Street. It is about a group of students who starts getting killed in their dreams, that too, by a clawed killer.
The fun part is that the killer named Freddy Kreuger, can only kill them while they are asleep. Which means, these people have to stay awake at all times to be safe from Freddy. But you know, a point comes when it is impossible for these characters to stay awake and they eventually start getting killed.
7. Fear Street Trilogy (2021)
Runtime: 1h 47m
Based on R.L Stine’s books, Fear Street is a story that takes place in three different timelines interwoven by a witch’s curse. The three movies altogether have different vibes. Part 1 is basically 90’s slasher inspired by Scream. Part 2, is more of an 80’s camp slasher and Part 3 is a dark horror witchcraft movie taking place in 1600s.
Other interesting part is that, in the sequels the story goes back in time, as in, from 1993 to 1978 to 1666. Because usually movies start with origin stories. In Fear Street, the origin story and the mystery are revealed in the end.
8. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
Runtime: 1h 21m
This movie is bizarrely brutal. And why won’t it be. It has a villain who wears human skin mask and kills people with a chainsaw!
Texas Chainsaw massacre 2022 is a sequel to its 1978 movie. In the movie, a group of Gen Zs go to the cursed town of Harlow. Harlow has become a ghost town after the events of 1978 and these Gen Zs want to revamp it. They have aspirations to make this town alive, but they don’t know that they are getting themselves into the deadliest trap.
While I admit the characters in this movie don’t give you the emotional quotient, the kills will make you look away from the screen a several times. It’s that bloody and gory.
9. Zombieland (2010)
Runtime: 1h 21m
Zombieland revolves around a college student who survived the zombie outbreak. But post-apocalypse he is in search for a safe place, a place without zombies. On this trip, he befriends three other survivors.
It’s a road trip movie packed with laughter and zombies.
