Spooky season has started and so has the reason to watch Halloween movies. And in this sense Adults and Kids are alike – we all need at least one good comforting fun scary movie to set us in the mood.

Scream, Halloween or The Shining might be our staple Halloween consumables, but for kids we need to look out for something less scary, less violent but at the same time it should be interesting.

So, here are 31 Halloween movies for pre teens – ages 9, 10, 11, 12 year olds – which feature ghosts, witches, monsters, aliens, dinosaurs and magicians!

1) Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004)

As a kid, I felt it was the most thrilling and scary movie I watched. In this movie there are various monster plaguing the town. So, it’s up to the gang to stop the scary ruckus.

2) The Rise of Guardians (2012)

The movie treats us with a lot of figures related to festivals. It has Sandman, Tooth fairy, Easter bunny and Santa Claus. These people join hands to fight Pitch, who is making kids have nightmares.

3) Night at the Museum

What if all the exhibits in a museum come to life? A security guard having a night duty needs to manage all these alive exhibits. There are dinosaurs, mummies, monkeys and many more interesting characters.

4) Mitchell vs the Machines (2021)

The Mitchell family is going on a road trip to drop their daughter in a film school. Soon, their trip gets interrupted by the army of machines. The family must fight against the machines to save the planet.

5) Harry Potter

Its always a treat to delve into this magical world. The film series is about Harry who gets admitted to a school for Witchcraft and Wizardry, named Hogwarts. He learns magic, make new friends and fights against evil.

6) Beauty and the Beast (2017)

Belle tries to save her father trapped in a castle with a Beast. Soon, she realises the Beast is the prince who has been cursed and she helps him break through the curse.

7) Bhoothnath (2008)

A family moves to a new mansion in Goa. Banku, their kid starts to befriend a ghost living in the mansion.

8) The Addams Family (2019)

The Adams family move to a new spooky house and are preparing for a meet with their creepy guests. Parallelly, a TV personality is opening a township in their neighbourhood. The situation turns upside down when the TV personality ask the family to shift to clear out the spooky space.

9) Charlie and the Chocolate factory (2005)

Charlie, among four other kids, gets a chance to visit the very secretive chocolate factory which makes world class chocolates.

10) Hotel Transylvania

The movie franchise is based around a hotel managed by a vampire. The situation soon turns ugly when a human check inn in their hotel.

11) Coco (2017)

This movie touches upon the traditions in Mexico, which are fascinating and educational at the same time. The plot is about Coco who accidentally lands into the ‘Land of Dead’. Soon, he gets to know more about his family history and underlying secrets.

The gang go to Australia to attend the Vampire Rock Music Festival. The artist who are going to perform are kidnapped by spooky vampires. Mystery Incorporated gang goes on an epic adventure to solve the mystery behind the legendary vampires.

Four women try to defend thousands of ghosts which emerge in the New York City.

14) Monster House (2006)

A trio finds that the neighbourhood house is not a house but a monster. They must tackle with this monster house before anybody falls prey to it.

15) Goosebumps

Could this list end without this movie? Not at all. In this movie series, all the monsters in the R. L. Stine’s books come to life. Zach and his friends need to work out for a solution before things get worse.

16) Ra.One (2011)

Shekhar, a programmer, makes an invincible villain in a game. Accidently the villain breaks through the game and comes into the real world. Now it’s up to G.One, the superhero from the game to save the world.

17) E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1985)

After an alien is left behind on Earth, Elliot and his siblings become friends with it. They need to keep the alien hidden and protected from the government. It also has a Halloween sequence where the alien dresses up as a ghost.

18) Halloween Town (1998)

After witnessing the magical powers of their grandma, children follow her to the Halloween Town. Soon, the children discover the secrets of the town while fighting with the dark forces.

19) Into the Woods (2014)

This movie features Cinderella, Red Riding hood, Rapunzel and many more interesting characters. It’s a treat to watch on Halloween!

20) Monsters Inc (2001)

Sulley and Mike are two monsters who scare children in the middle of the night. Soon, they become friends with a little girl which disrupts their work.

21) Monsters University (2013)

It is a sequel to ‘Monsters Inc’. Here the two monsters take admission in Monsters university to become the scariest monsters on the planet.

22) Spy Kids (2001)

Carmen and Juni find out a long-kept secret about their parents that they are spies. As their parents go out for a mission, these kids soon follow them, eventually helping them. The fun part are the amazing gadgets these spies use!

23) Jurassic World (2015)

Halloween is a perfect time to watch or rewatch this blockbuster which showcases a dinosaur theme park.

24) Koi Mil Gaya (2003)

It is a Bollywood take on E.T.(1985). Rohit, a disable person befriends an alien. This alien called ‘Jadu’ helps Rohit to fight bullies and live a normal life.

25) Krrish (2006)

It’s a sequel to ‘Koi Mil Gaya’. It is more of a superhero movie with a lot of action.

26) Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009)

Flint must fight with the food which has come to life to save the world.

27) Freaky Friday (2003)

The bodies of mother and daughter get switched in a freaky accident. They must turn back into their bodies until it’s too late.

28) Maleficent (2014)

It’s a take on the Sleeping beauty story with a twist!

29) Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)

Four friends get stuck inside a game. They need to play the game in order to get back to the real world. It is full of adventure and snakes, so beware!

30) Trolls (2016)

Trolls are happy creature who sing and dance. The giant miserable Bergens believe that they can only feel happy by eating a troll. Two different worlds provide enough friction for a captivating story. Also, just an idea, why not become a ‘troll’ this Halloween?

31) The Chronicles of Narnia

A film series that take you into the magical kingdom of Narnia with ton of mythical creatures.

Among these movie selections, Scooby Doo: Monsters Unleashed is the movie which I vividly remember seeing and was so excited, terrified and intrigued by when I was a pre teen.
